What You Can Drink While Fasting – Checklist
The simple answer is that you can have anything with zero calories or extremely low calories.
While fasting, you really should not have any calories, so the basics are drinking water, tea, and coffee black.
The purists also advise not to have anything that tastes sweet even without calories including fruit tea and diet soda. The reason is the sweet receptors on the tongue send messages to the pancreas to send insulin out into the body. To lose weight you need low insulin levels.
If a diet soda helps you, then just a glass. Don’t drink it all day. If your weight loss with fasting has plateauted then remove all diet soda’s.
Here is the starter’s list, just remember only choose diet soda to help you to keep on your fast and dont drink it all day.
There are many choices and here is a list of zero calorie drinks for fasting, note there is no alcoholic drinks on the list.
- Water ( hot and cold)
- Lemon or Lime squeeze
- Diet Cordial ( Zero Sugar or Juice)
- No Added Sugar Cordial made with 5% Juice
- Low Sugar Juice
- Diet Soft Drink eg Coke Zero, Mello Yellow Sprite, Diet Snapple Iced Tea,
- Pepsi Zero, Red Bull Zero, Monster Ultra Blue, Sprite Zero
- Homemade Stock – vegetable, beef or chicken
- Stock – made with a bullion cube or liquid
- Unsweetened Essence Water
- Unsweetened Sparkling Mineral Water
- Vitamin-water Zero
- Black Coffee
- Black tea
- Herbal Tea
That list covers what to drink, next is how much to drink. This of course depends on where you live, the weather, if your job is physical or sedentry and how much you are exercising.
As a general rule, aim for two litres. Have 2 cups four times a day. Fill your water bottle and keep it with you. Add some diet cordial if needed however keep this very dilute and over time just have water.
When you are fasting, drinking becomes even more important to prevent constipation. Don’t expect to “go” as you normally would, afterall there is less food moving through. Salty stock helps constipation, so one bullion cube in hot water each day of your two fast helps with a slow gut.
