Can I drink coffee during a two day fast?
One of the most common questions people ask when they start fasting for two days is whether or not they can drink coffee (or other drinks) while fasting. The short answer is yes, but it is a little more complex than that.
Drinking Coffee During Your Fast
Many people will rely on drinking coffee during their fast for several reasons.
. It’s satisfying
. It helps to be social with friends
. It’s stimulating
. It replaces the act eating
You can have coffee while fasting, but drinking it black is preferred.
If you must have milk, just a Tablespoon and for fasting, weight loss benefits take unsweetened almond milk as it has the lowest in energy and carbohydrates.
Try your black coffee hot and iced, and you may like one more than the other.
The best advice is to find a black coffee that is to your taste. If you try and it is bitter, ask for 50:50 back coffee and hot water. Try different beans for a new flavor and experiment.
Fasting for weight loss is not new however it is becoming trendy, and you may have heard of “Bulletproof Coffee.”
Bulletproof Coffee is just plain coffee with fat added as butter, MCT oil ( medium chain triglycerides), cream or coconut oil. Adding fat helps you to feel full, as this is what fat does to your appetite.
This style of coffee is often the choice for people who are on a very low carbohydrate for weight loss, cancer treatment or bodybuilding. These people are trying to achieve the metabolic condition called ” ketosis” where the body primarily burns ketones for energy made from body fat rather than glucose or blood sugar made from energy stores, ie, both carbohydrate and fat in the body.
Bulletproof coffee is not the choice for two-day fasting. Most recipes call for 3-6 TB of added fat adding 200-400 calories.
What about Sugar or Honey?
A teaspoon of sugar or honey has ten calories and for fasting a much better choice than the Bulletproof coffee. There is however 10 grams of carbohydrate and so not an option for a diet to achieve ketosis.
You could consider an artificial sweetener, just look on the label for calories are there are hidden sugars, and these detract from your goal of zero calories for your two days fast.
The best choice is the have your coffee black, that’s it and nothing more. The coffee itself has nothing in it but coffee beans and water, so naturally this is fine during a fast. The point is to be at zero calories or as low as you can be during the fasted state.
Therefore, you are advised not to have sugar, creamer, or even natural additions like honey to your coffee. However, some people believe it doesn’t make much of a difference with just a splash of creamer in their coffee. If this or a teaspoon of sugar helps you to maintain your fast, then take it as the benefits of fasting remain.
